Introduction
Grace Cathedral crowns Nob Hill as the third-largest Episcopal cathedral in California and one of San Francisco's most magnificent Gothic Revival buildings. Construction began in 1928 and the main structure was completed in 1964, inspired by France's Chartres Cathedral and built with reinforced concrete faced in stone to withstand San Francisco's seismic risk. Two towers rising about 49 meters echo Notre-Dame and offer panoramic views of the city and bay. Inside, the highlights include two indoor labyrinths designed by San Francisco artists, dozens of stained-glass windows and an AIDS Memorial Chapel. The cathedral is also known for its bronze doors reproducing Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, making it a must-visit for lovers of religion, architecture and art.
