Introduction
Concord is a historic and literary town about 30 minutes from Boston. It is where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired (1775 Battle of Lexington and Concord) and the center of the 19th-century Transcendentalist literary movement (Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Alcott all lived here) — an important American historical and literary landmark. The 1775 battle at North Bridge — Emerson's "shot heard round the world" — marked the Revolution's start; the bridge and battle site are preserved and free to visit. Literary significance includes Ralph Waldo Emerson's home, Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond (where he wrote Walden), Nathaniel Hawthorne's Old Manse and Louisa May Alcott's home. Walden Pond is now a state reservation for swimming and hiking. Visiting for Revolutionary War origins and Transcendentalist literature is a profound Boston-area cultural experience.
