Introduction
The Los Angeles Central Library is the main branch and heart of the Los Angeles Public Library system, located on Fifth Avenue in downtown LA. Designed by architect Bertram Goodhue and opened in 1926, it is one of the city's most important cultural landmarks. The building blends Egyptian Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles, with the facade adorned in exquisite reliefs and mosaics, and a central pyramidal tower topped by a torch statue symbolizing civilization, solemn and elegant. The interior is a treasure of decorative art the dome mural Los Angeles by artist Dean Cornwell depicts the literary history of LA, and the colored concrete rotunda and themed reading rooms are magnificent. After a devastating 1986 fire, a major restoration and expansion added a modern wing designed by Thom Mayne.
