Introduction
The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, founded in 1872 on 281 acres in Boston's Jamaica Plain, is one of North America's oldest public botanical gardens, managed by Harvard as part of its botanical research enterprise. The living collection holds about 15,000 woody plant species arranged scientifically by genus and geographic origin, functioning as a living library of plant taxonomy and horticulture. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the landscape, whose winding carriage roads and paths thread oaks, maples, conifers and a rhododendron dell with seasonal highlights: spring cherry, summer shade, autumn maple and winter conifer. Free and open to the public, it serves as a backyard for Bostonians to run, walk dogs and connect with nature, and as a paradise for plant lovers and photographers.
