Introduction
Perched on the Columbia Point waterfront in Boston, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum was designed by I. M. Pei and opened in 1979 as the official library of the 35th president. The building combines a great glass face with white concrete pavilions overlooking the sea, symbolizing Kennedy's open vision of the future. Permanent exhibits use original documents, photographs, footage and artifacts to trace his life from PT-boat commander to the presidency, with emphasis on the Cuban Missile Crisis, the space program and the civil rights movement. Reconstructions of the Oval Office and the 1960 debate stage immerse visitors in the era. Sea and architecture together turn a visit into a meditation on an American ideal.
