Introduction
Set on 133 acres at the northern foot of Griffith Park, the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Garden opened in 1966 and ranks among America's largest urban zoos. It houses more than 11,000 animals across 270 species, from African elephants and snow leopards to California condors, and participates actively in global endangered species programs. The botanical collection features over 800 species, with strengths in drought-adapted California natives and Australian and South African floras suited to Southern California's Mediterranean climate. The signature Elephants of Asia habitat evokes Thailand, India, Burma and Cambodia in one immersive landscape. Trails roll through oak woodland and cactus gardens, making it a rare nature-education destination within the city.
