Introduction
Standing in the heart of San Francisco's Financial District, the PacBell Building was completed in 1925 to designs by James W. Platt and Timothy Pflueger and is widely regarded as one of the finest Neo-Classical skyscrapers on the American West Coast. The 26-story tower long served as headquarters for Pacific Telephone & Telegraph, its facade dressed in terracotta and granite and crowned by an Italian Renaissance-style clock tower that anchors the city skyline. Converted in the 2000s to luxury residences and a Four Seasons hotel, the exterior was meticulously preserved. Even from the sidewalk, the columns and carved detailing convey the ambition of early-20th-century American corporate capital and the refinement of its craftsmanship.
