Introduction
Designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2004 within Millennium Park, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion is one of America's most striking outdoor concert venues. Its billowing stainless-steel shells unfurl like sails over the Great Lawn, seating about 11,000 and framing the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan beyond. From June through August it hosts the Grant Park Music Festival, the nation's longest-running free classical music festival, featuring the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus. On ordinary evenings, residents and visitors spread blankets on the lawn, letting orchestral sound wash over them as twilight turns the skyline to silhouette.
