Introduction
Angel Island is the largest island in San Francisco Bay, about 1 square kilometer, having served as an immigration station, military fort, and public health quarantine, earning the name Ellis Island of the West. Between 1900 and 1940, about one million Asian immigrants were processed and detained here; poems they carved into barracks walls remain the most poignant witness to immigration history. Today the island is a state park; the Perimeter Trail of about 8 kilometers offers 360-degree views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands, and East Bay. World War II batteries, the immigration barracks museum, and military stores survive, layering nature with history, making it an ideal day trip to understand the bay's plural identity.
