Introduction
The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is a 1943-built Liberty ship, one of only two remaining navigable EC2-S-C1 cargo ships from the 2,710 mass-produced during WWII, and the only one that sailed across the Atlantic for the 1994 Normandy invasion 50th anniversary. The 441-foot steel vessel is docked at Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf as a living history museum. Visitors can board the deck, descend into the engine room to see the still-operational 1,400-horsepower triple-expansion steam engine, explore crew quarters and cargo holds, and experience the harsh life of WWII merchant mariners in North Atlantic convoys. The ship preserves extensive original equipment and historical photographs, with volunteers often being Navy veterans whose personal stories give this battle-tested ship a moving historical warmth.
