Introduction

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site is one of Hawaii's most significant native historic sites. The heiau (temple) was ordered built by King Kamehameha I between 1790 and 1791 to seek the war god Ku's blessing for unifying the Hawaiian Islands. This temple on the "Hill of the Whale" is the largest ancient heiau still standing in Hawaii, constructed entirely of dry-stacked basalt boulders without mortar, measuring 72 by 30 by 6 meters, with seamlessly fitted walls that still astound modern observers. After performing the dedication ritual here, Kamehameha indeed unified Hawaii within a few years and founded the kingdom. The site also includes the John Young homestead ruins and the Puako Petroglyph field; the visitor center tells the unification epic through exhibits and films.
