Introduction

The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio stands in the Oak Park neighborhood west of Chicago, the residence and studio that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for himself and lived and worked in for twenty years from 1889 to 1909, celebrated as the birthplace of the Prairie School style. At age twenty-one Wright borrowed $5,000 to build the first version of the house, later expanding it with a playroom, dining room, and the 1905 octagonal studio drafting room. The exterior of Roman brick, wood eaves, and low-pitched roof embodies the horizontal Prairie aesthetic, while Wright personally designed every piece of furniture, light fixture, and art glass inside, expressing his total work of art philosophy. The studio trained a generation of Prairie architects including Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony, and Wright produced more than a hundred houses here, including the Freeman and Husser residences. Preserved by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust since 1974 and restored to its 1909 appearance in 1987, the site is the core shrine for studying Wright early work and American domestic life.
