Introduction
The Battleship USS Iowa Museum at Berth 87 in San Pedro, Los Angeles, is the floating museum of BB-61, the Battleship of Presidents, opened to the public in 2012. Laid down in 1940 and commissioned in 1943, USS Iowa was the lead ship of the Iowa class and served in World War II Pacific campaigns, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm in 1990. She carried President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic to the Tehran Conference, with a custom bathtub and elevator designed for his wheelchair. The ship is 270 meters long, 33 meters wide, displaces 45,000 tons, and mounts nine 16-inch guns capable of firing 1.2-ton armor-piercing shells up to 38 kilometers. Visitors tour the main turrets, bridge, Roosevelt stateroom, galleys, engine rooms, and crew berthing, climbing seven decks to grasp the scale and history of this steel beast, the most complete World War II battleship experience on the West Coast.
