Introduction

Lincoln Park sits at the northwest corner of San Francisco, covering about 0.4 square kilometers, and is the city westernmost bluff-top park facing the Pacific. Designed by John McLaren and named for President Lincoln in the 1910s, the park spreads along the Golden Gate strait bluffs with views of the Marin Headlands, the Golden Gate Bridge, and ocean vessels. Its most famous feature is the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, funded by Alma Spreckels and built after the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, a three-sided colonnaded building modeled on the Palais de la Légion dHonneur in Paris, holding Rodin The Thinker, European old masters, and modern French art. The park also contains an 18-hole Lincoln Park Golf Course, Lincoln Park Trail, the Lands End coastal cliff path, and a Spreckels Memorial Labyrinth. Walking the bluff trail through pine groves with sea breezes and Pacific surf, visitors enjoy one of San Francisco most romantic sunset spots and a hidden haven for hikers and golfers.
