Introduction
Boystown is one of the most historically significant LGBTQ+ communities in Chicago and the American Midwest, formally known as Northalsted and stretching for about six blocks along N Halsted Street in the Lakeview neighborhood. Since the rise of the gay liberation movement in the 1970s, it has grown into a landmark of diverse culture that blends bars, nightclubs, restaurants, bookstores, boutiques, and community service centers. Thirty-seven rainbow-painted steel Legacy Walk pylons line the street, with plaques honoring figures such as Harvey Milk, Alan Turing, and Frida Kahlo for their contributions to LGBTQ+ history, forming the first outdoor LGBTQ+ history education installation in the United States. Each June the Chicago Pride Parade and each August the Market Days festival draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and turn the district into the city biggest rainbow celebration. By day visitors browse independent bookstores and brunch spots, and by night the area becomes the busiest nightlife hub in the Midwest, making it a must-visit for experiencing Chicago inclusive and diverse spirit.
