Introduction
Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the Contemporary Jewish Museum is itself a work of art: its signature blue steel form draws inspiration from the Hebrew word chai (life), seamlessly fusing the historic Jessie Street substation with a modern addition. Rather than a permanent collection, the museum presents rotating thematic exhibitions exploring Jewish culture, art, history, and contemporary social issues across photography, installation, video, and craft. Shows revisit Jewish holidays and Holocaust memory while also engaging contemporary Jewish artists on identity, migration, and community, making it one of San Francisco most thought-provoking small museums.
