Introduction
Fort Funston is located on the southwestern coast of San Francisco, combining historic military remnants with stunning natural scenery as a seaside park. Originally built in 1900 as a coastal artillery battery, it once housed five-inch coastal guns to protect the southern approach to San Francisco Bay. Today the decommissioned fort is jointly managed by the National Park Service and San Francisco Recreation and Parks, becoming a beloved outdoor destination for city residents. The park most famous feature is its 60-meter sandy cliffs, among the highest coastal bluffs in San Francisco and a paradise for hang gliding enthusiasts. From the bluff summit, visitors can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, with the Farallon Islands and Marin County coastline visible in the distance. Multiple hiking trails wind through coastal scrub vegetation, making it an excellent spot for seabird watching and whale migration viewing, with gray whales frequently spotted near shore during winter migration season.
