Introduction
Bethesda Fountain sits at the heart of Bethesda Terrace in New York Central Park and is one of the most iconic landmarks within the park. Designed by Emma Stebbins in 1873, this Neoclassical fountain was inspired by a passage in John Milton masque Comus depicting an angel. At the top stands a winged angel poised for flight, while below four smaller cherubs symbolize Temperance, Purity, Health, and Peace, with water cascading from the angel feet into the lower basin. Bethesda Terrace serves as the geographical and visual center of Central Park, surrounded by lush trees and open lawns, making it a beloved gathering spot for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Each summer the terrace hosts the Central Park SummerStage music festival, with the fountain steps serving as a natural amphitheater where listening to free concerts under the stars is one of the most romantic experiences in New York.
