Introduction

Belmont Park is a historic oceanfront amusement park on Mission Beach's boardwalk in San Diego, opened July 4, 1925 as the 'Mission Beach Amusement Center' — one of the West Coast's oldest. Its star is the Giant Dipper, a 1925 wooden coaster by Prior & Church, one of only two large wooden scaffolded coasters left on the West Coast; it was listed on the National Register in 1978 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1987. After decline and demolition threats, restoration of the coaster in 1990 helped rebuild the park into a beachfront dining, shopping and entertainment complex. Entry is free; rides are ticketed.
