Introduction

The Rookery Building, completed in 1888 at 209 LaSalle Street in Chicago's financial district, was designed by Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root; at eleven stories it was among the grandest buildings of its time. The name recalls rooftop bird nests on the earlier building. In 1905 Frank Lloyd Wright remodeled its light court and lobbies, wrapping iron columns in white marble and adding geometric railings and prismatic chandeliers. The Moorish/neo-Romanesque exterior frames a famed light court; it remains an office building with a glass-domed atrium, toured by the Chicago Architecture Center.
