Introduction

Downtown Crossing is the shopping and retail core of downtown Boston, centered on the intersection of Washington and Summer Streets. It rose in the 1800s as the commercial district expanded south, home of America's first department stores, including Jordan Marsh (founded in Boston in 1841), whose Washington Street flagship opened in 1861, and Filene's. Part of Washington Street is now a pedestrian zone with Macy's, street performers and historic storefronts, right beside the Boston Common.
