Introduction
Hearst Tower is a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper conceived as a dialogue between old and new: a 1928 Art Deco limestone base by Joseph Urban for William Randolph Hearst, topped in 2006 by a 46-story glass-and-steel tower by Norman Foster (Foster+Partners). Its diagrid structural system needs less steel, and the building was the first in New York to earn LEED Gold; nearly 90% of its structural steel contains recycled material. It houses the Hearst headquarters, with a grand lobby and atrium open to the public.
