Introduction
Castle Clinton National Monument is a circular sandstone fort in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, built 1808-11 to defend New York harbor. Undamaged by war, it later served as an opera venue, as America's first major immigrant reception station from 1855 to 1890 (about 7.5 million immigrants landed here), and as an aquarium from 1896. Today it houses ticketing for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferries, and the fort is open free with exhibits.
