Introduction

Opened in 1875 at 2 New Montgomery Street in San Francisco's financial district, the Palace Hotel was among the grandest hotels of its era and was billed as the world's largest. After the original building was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1909. Its landmark Garden Court, with marble Corinthian columns, a kaleidoscopic stained-glass dome ceiling and Austrian crystal chandeliers, epitomizes San Francisco's Gilded-Age palatial hotels. The lobby houses the small Landmark 18 museum of mementos and photographs spanning nearly 150 years, and the hotel has hosted heads of state and countless Hollywood film shoots.
