Introduction

The Great Lawn is a 55-acre open green at the center of Central Park, between Belvedere Castle and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, Manhattan's quintessential picnic and open-air space. Built in the 1930s on a former reservoir site and restored in 1997 at a cost of about $18 million, it holds eight ball fields and is ringed by the Arthur Ross Pinetum and Turtle Pond. It is the park's grandest concert venue, hosting the annual New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks and the Global Citizen Festival, and likewise memorable reunion-area shows by Simon & Garfunkel (1981, about 500,000 fans), Diana Ross (1983) and Paul Simon (1991).
