Introduction

Calico Ghost Town is one of California's most famous ghost towns. In the Mojave Desert, this historic mining town features preserved 19th-century silver-mining buildings, unique Western frontier atmosphere and interactive activities — a nostalgic stop on the LA-to-Las Vegas drive. Founded in 1881 during the silver rush with about 3,000 residents and 500+ mines, it was abandoned after silver prices crashed in the 1890s. In the 1950s, Knott's Berry Farm founder Walter Knott purchased and restored it as a Western-themed park. Today visitors walk preserved 19th-century streets, visit a silver mine museum, ride a mini train, try gold panning and shooting. Mystery Shack (physics tricks) and Western shops complete the experience. Along I-15 between LA and Las Vegas — a perfect midway stop.
