Introduction

The Morgan Library & Museum originated as financier J.P. Morgan's private library and treasure house at Madison Avenue and 36th Street, built in 1906 by architect Charles McKim. It houses extraordinary holdings of medieval manuscripts, incunabula, drawings and letters. Most iconic are McKim's three Renaissance-inspired East, Middle and West rooms Morgan personally opened, now joined by Renzo Piano's glass-roofed 2006 expansion. The collection includes a Gutenberg Bible, the Crusca/Lindau Gospels, and manuscripts such as Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol,' as well as music scores by Beethoven and Mozart, making it a major center for Western manuscript study.
