Introduction

The Met Cloisters is The Metropolitan Museum of Art's branch devoted to medieval European art, perched on a bluff in Fort Tryon Park at the northern tip of Manhattan overlooking the Hudson River. Its buildings were assembled from original medieval cloisters and stonework shipped from France, Spain and Italy, arranged around garden courtyards. Signature holdings include the famous Unicorn Tapestries, the Belles Heures of Jean de France, and the Romanesque Spanish apse of Fuentidueña, together with the Treasury of goldsmith work and illuminated manuscripts. It is the only museum in the United States focused on the art and architecture of the Middle Ages.
