Introduction

Haymarket is Boston's oldest surviving open-air market, held on Blackstone Street between the North End and Government Center since around 1830. At dawn on Fridays and Saturdays vendors lay out boxes of produce and seafood that supermarkets passed over, at prices famous for being absurdly low, with box-load clear-outs in the final half hour. It is not a farmers' market but the classic New England surplus market: ripe, cheap, and best eaten the same day. Quincy Market, Boston Public Market and Faneuil Hall are all steps away.
