Introduction

MacArthur Park lies just west of downtown Los Angeles. Opened in 1890 as Westlake Park and modeled on New York's Central Park and the grand parks of Europe, it featured a freshwater lake, boathouse, grand promenades and a bandshell, with the lake fed by natural springs. In 1942 it was renamed for General Douglas MacArthur, a change driven by publisher William Randolph Hearst. It is also a historically significant site for LA's LGBTQ community. Since 2007 the Levitt Pavilion has hosted free outdoor concerts, and the lakefront draws rowing, strolling and musicians.
