Introduction

The Olancha Sand Dunes sit at the south end of California's Owens Valley on the southwestern margin of Owens Lake, framed between the towering Sierra Nevada and the Coso Range in an area of active reversing dunes covering more than 8 square km. Designated an OHV recreation area of about 1,000 acres of short, gentle, rolling dunes peaking at around 75 feet, most visitors ride motorcycles, ATV/UTVs or four-wheel-drive vehicles; those without 4WD can park on hard sand and hike about 0.75 miles to the dunes, with BLM-permitted camping. This desert landscape is also a favored film location.
