Introduction

The Kluczynski Federal Building is the core tower of Chicago's Federal Center, a glass-and-steel modernist landmark designed under the direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In the plaza before it stands Alexander Calder's large steel sculpture Flamingo, unveiled on October 24, 1974, standing about 53 feet tall, weighing about 50 tons, and painted in a signature 'Calder Red' that offsets the dark glass towers.
