Introduction

The Marquette Building is a classic example of the Chicago School of architecture, designed by the firm Holabird & Roche and completed in 1895 with a steel frame clad in brick and terra cotta. Its E-shaped floor plan let light and air reach deep into the interior. Named for 17th-century French missionary-explorer Father Jacques Marquette, it features bronze bas-reliefs at the main entrance and a dazzling mosaic by Louis Comfort Tiffany recounting his exploits. Restored by the MacArthur Foundation in 2001, its historic lobby remains open to the public.
