Introduction

The Canadian War Museum is Canada's national military history museum, standing by the Ottawa River. Its angular, copper-green-clad modern building is itself meaningful and symbolic. The museum systematically presents Canada's military history—from early Indigenous conflicts and colonial wars to the two World Wars, the Korean War and modern peacekeeping—using many precious artifacts, tanks, artillery, aircraft, art and personal items to tell how war shaped Canada and its people. In the solemn Memorial Chamber, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier is lit by a single beam of sunlight at a specific moment each Remembrance Day—a clever, moving design. This is a thought-provoking place of remembrance and memory.
