Rainbow Valley

Introduction

Rainbow Valley lies in the Atacama Desert, about an hour and a half's drive from the town of San Pedro, and takes its name from its colorful mountains—a dazzling geological wonder in the desert. The valley's rock layers are rich in different minerals, giving them a wealth of colors—green (from copper), red and ochre (from iron and oxidation), white (from salt and gypsum), purple and even black—layered and interwoven across the mountain, like a painter's palette spilled on the earth under the sun, intense and fantastical, a sharp contrast to the single, desolate tones elsewhere in the Atacama. In the valley there is also a rock called Hierbas Buenas bearing ancient petroglyphs of llamas, figures and other patterns, adding a cultural depth to this natural wonder. With its brilliant colored mountains and ancient rock art, Rainbow Valley is a unique place in the Atacama where color and history intertwine.
