Introduction
San José's Pre-Columbian Gold Museum sits underground beneath the downtown Cultural Plaza, an important collection of ancient indigenous Costa Rican goldwork and a great window into the region's pre-Columbian civilization. It holds about 1,600 pre-Columbian gold artifacts of considerable total weight, crafted by ancient peoples (such as the Diquís culture) living in today's Costa Rica between roughly 500 and 1500 AD—gold figures, animals (especially frogs, eagles, jaguars and other religious, symbolic forms), amulets, breastplates, jewelry and scepter heads. The exquisite craftsmanship and striking forms reveal ancient metallurgical skill and a rich cosmology and faith. Exhibits explain the making, meaning and social culture behind the gold. Descending into this underground golden hall is a must-visit to understand Costa Rica's history and culture.
