Introduction
Alexandria's Roman Theatre is the only surviving ancient Roman circular (semicircular) theatre in Egypt, a precious witness to the city's Roman history with its well-preserved marble tiers and ruins. Alexandria was a flourishing ancient metropolis (Ptolemaic and Roman periods), leaving rich heritage. This Roman Amphitheatre, discovered in the 20th-century excavations at the rich Kom El Dikka site, was built around the 2nd century AD and is the only such Roman theatre found in Egypt—especially precious. Well preserved, it is a semicircle (horseshoe) of tiered white-and-grey marble seating around a central stage, holding hundreds, elegant and antique, once used for concerts, performances and assemblies (with reportedly good acoustics). The Kom El Dikka site also yields Roman baths, villas (with fine mosaics, the "Villa of the Birds"), cisterns and lecture halls, together recreating Alexandria's Roman urban life. Visiting the Roman Theatre and Kom El Dikka is a historically meaningful Alexandria stop.
