Introduction
Amanohashidate, in Miyazu, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, is one of Japan's Three Famous Views — a narrow 3.6 km sandbar between Miyatsu Bay and Lake Aso, pine-clad and named for looking like a bridge to heaven. From the hilltop it lies like a bridge on the water; the local 'matanozoki' trick — bending to view it upside-down between the legs — makes it seem a staircase to the sky. With bay, pine groves and hot springs, it is a fine escape near Kansai for Japan's garden-like nature and mythic mood, a vista poets have sung for centuries.
