Introduction
Notoro Cape juts into the Sea of Okhotsk northwest of Abashiri, Hokkaidō, Japan, where a grassy plateau breaks off in cliffs some 40–50 m high and the view opens almost without obstruction. The black-and-white banded Notoro lighthouse has guided shipping here since it was first lit in 1917, and together with pasture, grazing horses and deep blue water it makes an unmistakably northern scene. On clear days the Shiretoko peaks and the snow ridges of Mt Shari rise to the east, while Abashiri town and Lake Notoro lie to the south. The cape is at its most striking from January to March, when drift ice carried south on the Okhotsk current packs against the shore and turns the sea into a shattered white plain — one of the most reliable places in mainland Japan to see the phenomenon. Summer brings sea fog, long sunsets and clear star fields, and the headland has appeared in many Japanese films, making it a standard stop on an eastern Hokkaidō road trip.
