Introduction

Hakone Shrine stands in a cedar grove on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi in Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan. Tradition credits its founding to the monk Mangan in 757, and as Hakone Gongen it became the guardian shrine of the Kantō region, revered by warrior houses: Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed here before raising his army, and Tokugawa Ieyasu granted it lands, with successive shoguns treating it as a deity of fortune and safe travel.
