Nagamachi Bukeyashiki Nomuraya

Introduction

Nomura-ke is the only samurai house in Kanazawa's Nagamachi district whose interior is open to visitors. The family entered the Kaga domain with Maeda Toshiie in 1583 and held senior posts on a 1,200-koku stipend. The estate left the family after the Meiji era and was later rebuilt with old materials; the Upper Room keeps a coffered cypress ceiling, fusuma by domain court painters and glazed shoji. The highlight is the stroll garden seen from the wet veranda: water from the Onosho canal, Kanazawa's oldest waterway, feeds a winding stream and cascade among 400-year-old bayberry and evergreen oaks, a large snow-viewing lantern and a granite bridge. The garden won two stars in the 2009 Michelin Green Guide Japan and ranked third in a 2003 US Japanese-garden survey. An upstairs tea room serves matcha overlooking the garden; the Onikawa Library displays family documents and armour.
