Introduction

The Izumo Dome in Yano-cho, Izumo, was completed in April 1992 and is the largest wooden building in Japan, a 143-metre-diameter, 49-metre-high arena whose PTFE membrane roof admits soft daylight, its form inspired by the Japanese umbrella. Seating 2,500, it hosts basketball and volleyball matches and concerts, and doubles as a civic gathering point on the road to Izumo Taisha.
