Introduction

Atami Baien lies along the Ui River in Baiencho, Atami, and is the plum garden that blooms earliest and turns red latest in Japan. It holds 59 varieties and about 470 plum trees, many decades to over a century old, including rare cultivars such as Toji-bai and Baigyo-koh. Thanks to Shizuoka's mild climate, early cultivars open in early January and the main varieties follow in succession through early March, giving a season close to two months. Six little bridges cross the stream, and the Plum Cascade, the Shinpei Nakayama Memorial Museum, the Korean Garden and a free foot bath fed by direct hot-spring water are scattered along the way, making it easy to pair with a winter stay in Atami's onsen district.

✨ Highlights

1
Japan's earliest plum garden
Shizuoka's mild climate brings the earliest cultivars into bloom in early January, roughly a month ahead of other plum gardens in Japan.
2
59 varieties, some 470 old trees
Many trees are decades to over a century old, including rare Toji-bai and Baigyo-koh; red and white blooms run in sequence into early March.
3
Six bridges over the Ui River
Plums line both banks and little bridges cross the stream, the most photogenic stretch; fresh green in April and the latest autumn colour in early December are also worth the trip.
4
Plum Cascade and Nakayama museum
The cascade changes with the seasons and a cave behind it lets you walk round to the far side; the Shinpei Nakayama Memorial Museum is free and shows his relocated villa, manuscripts and early records.
5
Korean Garden and spring foot bath
Built to mark the 2000 Japan-Korea summit held in Atami, using Korean tiles and stone walls; the free foot bath beside it uses water straight from the spring and opens during the plum and maple festivals.
6
The 82nd Plum Festival
Runs 10 January to 8 March 2026 with tea stalls, local produce booths and traditional performances at weekends. Note there is no night illumination in the garden.

💡 Tips

• Admission applies only during the festival window of 8:30-16:00; entry is free and unlimited at other times, so weekdays are best for a quiet visit.
• There is no night illumination inside the garden. If you want blossom lit up, come at dawn or late afternoon instead, when the light suits photos better.
• The foot bath opens only during the plum and maple festivals and you should bring your own towel (sold on site too).
• Water flow at the Plum Cascade is regulated by pumps and sometimes stops - a dry cascade does not mean you are in the wrong place.
• Take the bus from Atami rather than walking: the railway line and KINOMIYA Shrine are on the way, but the uphill stretch is hard on knees.
• Atami is busy with onsen stays and fireworks during the festival, so book rooms a month ahead; city hotel guests get the JPY 100 rate with proof of stay.
