Introduction

'Light of Shodoshima' was a large land-art work by Taiwanese artist Wang Wen-Chih for the 2013 Setouchi Triennale's second edition, built in Shodoshima's Nakayama area. He wove about 5,000 local bamboo poles into a giant domed bamboo house that merged with the hills, bamboo groves and terraces; daylight cast dappled shadows through the weave, and at night LED lights glowed — a true 'light of the island' that drew crowds to a remote village. Weathered by wind and rain, it was dismantled after about two years; though gone, it remains one of the Triennale's iconic bamboo works.
