Introduction
Shiroyama Park spreads over some 25 hectares on the slopes of Shiroyama hill east of the Miya River in Takayama, Gifu, on the site of Takayama Castle. Begun in 1588 by the Hida lord Kanamori Nagachika, the castle housed the Kanamori clan for four generations until their transfer to Kaga in 1692, leaving stone walls and baileys. Some 700 cherry trees bloom in mid-April over the Sanmachi old quarter and the Northern Alps; the wood is one of Japan's 'forest bathing' hundred, and the climb from the Ninomaru playground reaches the keep ruins and lookout.
