Introduction

Rokugo is a rural hamlet some 30 minutes by car southeast of central Furano, Hokkaido, and the principal filming location of the classic TV drama 'From the North Country' (1981-2002, written by So Kuramoto, starring Kunie Tanaka). Rolling farmland, detached farmhouses and distant mountains make up the quintessential Furano landscape, scattered with drama sites — Goro's Stone House, built of stones gathered from the volcanic fields of Mount Furano, the log cabin of Rokugo no Mori, and the 'Picked-up House' of waste buses and telephone booths. The view from the Rokugo lookout was chosen one of Japan's hundred rural scenes, taking in the hamlet's fields and flower gardens, with the Furano Jam Garden and a music-box hall nearby.
