Introduction

Cape Tappi, on the northern tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula in Sotogahama, Aomori, is the northernmost headland of Honshu, with the Sea of Japan, the Tsugaru Strait and Mutsu Bay meeting around it and fierce winds giving it the name 'Cape of Wind'. The white circular Tappi Saki Lighthouse, first lit in 1932 and 13 metres tall, is one of the 50 selected lighthouses of Japan. Nearby stand a song monument to Sayuri Ishikawa's Tsugaru Kaikyō Fuyugeshiki, monomials to Osamu Dazai and Yoshida Shoin, and 362 steps of National Route 339 — the only stretch of national highway made entirely of stairs.

💡 Tips

• The wind is fierce here — hats and paper maps blow away, so secure everything you carry
• Do not linger on exposed cliff paths in fog or rain; shorten the walk and turn back
• The 362-step stairway is fully exposed; visitors with limited mobility can enjoy the view from the car park
• The town bus from JR Minmaya Station takes about 30 minutes but runs infrequently — confirm your return journey
• The Tsugaru Line between Kanita and Minmaya is suspended, so onward connections need checking
• The free car park holds only about 40 cars and 3 coaches, so arrive early in peak season
