Introduction

The Hamamatsu Diorama Factory opened in March 2012 inside Zaza City Hamamatsu, five minutes on foot from JR Hamamatsu Station. It is not a museum of industrial or city-planning models; it is built around one artist, Takuji Yamada, a professional scenic model maker born in Hamamatsu. He is known for miniature Showa-era everyday scenes, faded shop signs, utility poles, bicycles, bathhouses and period interiors, with some seventy works compressing a generation's memory into a fraction of its size, alongside tokusatsu and robot subjects so dense with detail that they reward a close look. An open studio inside lets visitors sometimes watch Yamada or other makers at work, and a small shop by the exit sells 3D laser-copied figures from the dioramas and an official pamphlet, a way to take some of that craft home. Admission is JPY 500 for adults, JPY 200 for junior and senior high students, JPY 100 for primary pupils and free for preschool children. Hours are 10:00-19:00 with last entry at 18:30, extended to 20:00 in some periods; it closes every Wednesday and follows the Zaza City calendar, with short-notice closures posted on its site. Being beside the station, it fits easily between Hamamatsu Castle, the Museum of Musical Instruments and a plate of unagi; it is a small venue, so 40 to 60 minutes is right and half a day would be too much.
