Introduction

Fukuoka Art Museum opened in 1979 in a building by modernist architect Kunio Maekawa and reopened in March 2019 after a two-and-a-half-year renovation. Its roughly 16,000 works run on two tracks: East Asian antiquities, Buddhist art and tea utensils from the Kuroda family collection, and modern and contemporary art including Rothko, Miró and Brancusi alongside Kusama and Murakami. The best-known work is actually outside: Yayoi Kusama's yellow-and-black Pumpkin stands by the Ohori Park pond and can be photographed without a ticket. The low building sits close to the water, with full-height windows drawing the pond's light into the lobby, so a lap of the park after the galleries makes an unhurried half day in central Fukuoka. At JPY 200 for the collection show it is also exceptional value.
