Introduction

The Rainbow Bridge is a double-deck suspension bridge spanning Tokyo Bay and linking the Shibaura waterfront with the entertainment district of Odaiba. Completed in 1993, it stretches about 798 metres and has become one of the most recognizable modern landmarks of the Tokyo waterfront. By day its white towers frame views with Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower; after dark the entire structure is lit in red, white and green, the colour scheme shifting with the season and special events, while its reflection shimmers on the bay. A fully enclosed walkway, the Rainbow Promenade, runs along the lower deck so visitors can stroll or cycle across in roughly ten minutes, taking in Tokyo Bay, aircraft lifting off from nearby Haneda Airport, and the glittering skyline of the city centre. Around the bridge sit Fuji Television's headquarters, the VenusFort mall, a replica Statue of Liberty and seaside parks, making it the hub of any Odaiba outing and a favourite filming location for Tokyo scenes in film and anime.
